The aim of this module is to train students with hands-on experiences in scientific working methods and skills. The students gain an overview and apply central elements: beginning with the selection of suitable sources of information and organizational skills up to written reports, posters and oral presentations.

The Seminar „Spatial Ecology“ works with examples of ecological spatial phenomena (e.g. source-sink dynamics, metapopulations, invasions, coexistence). The exercise „Modelling of Spatial Ecological Processes“ covers numerical simulations of spatial processes (e.g. cellular automaton models, species distribution models). The relevant modelling approaches will be applied and discussed.

The seminar (68024) aims at
  • students from MSc Geoökologie, MSc Angewandte Informatik, MSc Biodiversity & Ecology, and MSc Environemntal Geography (see CampusOnline for module affiliation)
  • gaining in-depth knowledge about scientific writing and the publication process
  • awake/increase your interest in biodiversity research and give an overview of current questions in biodiversity science

  • write scientific review paper (in group of 2)
  • write a review commentary on two papers authored by your peers (alone)
  • revise your own paper writing a point-by-point response (in group of 2)

The course will serve as an introduction to R, topics such as vector, data frame, list, read and write external data and plotting the data will be addressed.

Regularly Scheduled Meeting: Jour Fixe

Logistical and organisational details are discussed. Students are also able to share and exchange their individual experience and knowledge, discuss current study issues and for group mentoring.

The Jour Fixe is a mandatory part of the module O "Overview".

Diese Themen reichen vom Anfang des Lebens über die Entstehung und Ausbreitung des Menschen und den historischen Einfluss des Menschen auf unsere heutigen Landschaften bis zum Einfluss des aktuellen Klimawandels auf globale Biodiversitätsmuster.

Im Seminar Biogeographie werden wir in einer Einführungsveranstaltung das wissenschaftliche Schreiben für das zum gewählten Thema zu erstellende Mini-Paper üben. Des Weiteren werden Präsentationstechniken vermittelt bzw. vertieft.

M2 Statistical Modelling with R:

The main topics of the course are: correlation and linear regression, hypothesis testing, analysis of Variance (ANOVA), linear mixed-effect models and generalized linear models (GLM).

The course requires basic programming knowledge.
